Radio Show: How and Why to Use QCharm

http://ashfordweb.biz/meissner/on-the-air/

Because QCharm incorporates Dyna Vox Mayer-Johnson Boardmaker images with mainstream fashion (silicone wristbands with clip-on charms), it is the perfect way to discretely communicate with your loved one with Autism. It is also an excellent device for you, the caregiver, to learn and use cues that help you remain calm in any situation. In the 5/22/2012 radio show (hosted by Christine Larkin), I share personal and professional experiences to explain how you, too, can learn from your child's behaviors. What are some of your experiences in which your child or loved one gave you new perspective on life?

iphone5: holographic display of keyboard

I have always had stubby fingers so texting on tiny buttons is a chore. But with this keyboard displayed on a table top, I won't have to worry.

Dear Santa...:o)

an_iphone5.png 348×231 pixels

The other day my son told me I had to watch a youtube video. I had no idea that this video would give me goosebumps. Normally, tech gadgets and computers give me hives. But when I watched the iphone5 video, I was stunned! Could it be real that by this October we can buy a phone with holographic displays? I love the key board that displays on a table top...and you can even adjust the keyboard's level of brightness right on the table top! That is crazy cool. My husband says my dream is as close as I'll get to having one of these phones...but it sure is fun to dream. Who knows...dreams can become realities. Are you ready for the iphone5?

It's OK to not be "famous"

In a day where many strive for "celebrity" status, this article may be helpful for those of us who work hard with little or no recognition...

Big Project Ideas for Free: Lowe's Magazine

Lowe's Commercial "Closet Makeover"

Lowe's Accessible Home Solutions

Have you ever tried to get around after an injury or during an illness? My experience as an Occupational Therapist and as someone who has gone through surgeries and injuries that limit mobility, I highly recommend you check out Lowe's Accessible Department. So much energy is needed to do the daily self-care activities that adding environmental obstacles makes self-care a full time job. Why not limit the obstacles and spend your time and energy recovering and even enjoying time with others...or with a hobby? What are some of your solutions and experiences??

Bose Headphones: A great way to make daily chores fun

Blogger: QCharm Cares for Caregivers - Create post

Yes, even washing dishes and folding laundry can be fun...if you crank up your favorite music and listen to it with your Bose headphones. Ken (my husband) just bought these for his plane trip and let me try them. The sound quality made me want to spend extra time in the kitchen:o)

Yanni Live in Budapest-Nightingale

Today Show/Scotto Pasta Recipe

Because I have been ill since the 1st week of February, I have been doing the least amount of housework/meal prep as possible. So when I saw this recipe on the Today Show this am, I thought, "even I can do this tonight!" I love the idea of melting butter in a pan then sauteing pepper and finally adding pasta-boil water. How easy is that?! What are your favorite recipes and short cuts you use when you are exhausted?

QCharm Sample Image

To arm you with visual cues so you can capture teachable moments with your loved one, I print Dyna Vox Mayer-Johnson images (under contractual agreement) on flat surface charms that clip to a 100% silicone wristband. These charms/images are great for those who need help with following a schedule, communicating, and tolerating non-preferred activities. Visit qcharm.com or contact me for a list of images I can print for you. (info@qcharm.com).

About Face

http://video.today.msnbc.msn.com/today/46571949#46571949

Back in the 2nd grade, one of my teachers looked at me in disgust and then ignored me all day. It wasn't until the next day when she told me that she was so glad I didn't wear that eye shadow again that I realized why she avoided me. Ever since that day I have had an aversion to wearing make-up. But now that I am 45 I need SOMETHING to cover up the years of wear and tear. So when I saw this segment I couldn't help but remember that day in 2nd grade...but I also couldn't help think that even though this make-up segment seems so shallow and not-so news worthy, it does offer techniques that we tired caregivers can use when we choose to look rested and peaceful. :o)

Do your children come to you at bedtime and announce that they need graph paper (or other less often used paper)...for tomorrow's morning class? I just found out about this site (via Today Show segment) http://www.printablepaper.net. You can either print paper styles from this site or you can purchase their software. This site also has paper styles for budgets, business, etc. What are some of your fun stories of children asking for hard-to-find items at the last minute?

Funny Lego Brick Story: Warning. Parents can choke too:)

http://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/building-blocks-cakes/ca36541e-624c-48af-ab78-68ef256e8903

My son is OBSESSED with Legos. Legos are all over our house (at least that's how it seems). So what happened a few days ago doesn't surprise me. While we were sitting side by side, he looked down and saw a tiny, missing-in-action Lego piece. He shouted, "Look!" I shouted, "What?" And when my mouth was wide open during the word "What," he playfully threw the Lego piece at me...and it went right into my throat. :O There I was, the day before my 45th birthday, choking on a Lego piece. After several modified abdominal thrusts and forced coughs, I expelled the Lego...straight down to the floor. It came out with such force that it scared my son. Yes, my son with Autism has sympathy and I love how he can be very tender and loving. Once we realized I was going to see my 45th birthday (unless something else happened), we laughed and laughed. Ahhhh (or maybe I should be safe and say Hmmmmm) the unexpected joys of caring for a child.

Autism Community : PatientsLikeMe

Autism Community : PatientsLikeMe

I only have a minute to blog so I am just gonna post this link for y'all to discover and explore. My son with Autism wants to move the large fish tank all the way from his room to our dining room/office area. This wouldn't be so bad except we already have a crowded space in which he has added the other fish bowl and rat cage:o) Wish me luck!

TODAY Show: Travel Advisors

TODAY Video Player
If you are a champion traveler, great! If not, I recommend you check out this video from the Today Show.

I have a really hard time getting up the courage to travel away from home, either with or without my young son (with autism). The hassle of either setting up everything at the home front for others to care for him or of managing his needs in an airplane, hotels or relatives' homes seems to outweigh the benefits of the experience. I can just hear my Applied Behavior Analysis home trainer coaching me, "Your fearfulness tells me that you need more travel practice." That's why I put my bowl of cereal down and listened to the Today Show segment explaining how travel agents should really be advisers that help you explore creative ways to help you meet your personal needs while you travel. Meanwhile, my husband is preparing to leave home for business travel that will take him West then East across the Atlantic. He is a seasoned traveler. Maybe we should see a travel adviser to help us create a travel plan that will meet both of our needs...his for excitement and mine for relaxation. What are your travel tips and experiences?
